fins and feathers

Haunting and swaying, its hard to reconcile the musical mash-up in my head.

Is this a typically hip-yet-grungy (maybe grungy-because-hip) 9th Ward band? A barroom chorale, with Micah McKee as the drunken chorus leader? A fun funeral where everyone is dancing yet also knows they'll be a little sadder for the rest of their lives?

Its all here: McKee's booming and plaintive voice; lyrics of love, longing, and want; Rhodes, guitars, bass, and drums building a music that crescendos in every song with horns blaring to an emotional peak. At times it seems McKee is fighting to sing over those horns, but that's how it sounded live at their CD release party on January 16th, and that's where the frustrated, intense energy was coming from, and where it needs to stay. With a laid back beat yet gripping feel throughout, Fins and Feathers is a proper showcase for Silent Cinema's ability to capture excitement, intensity, and melancholy, all wrapped up in a song.
